SMT Reel Flanges: Sizes, Compatibility and Stock

The flanges are the covers that form the reel around the tape: they hold the roll, keep it aligned, and allow the feeder to unwind it without friction.

It's the cheapest part of the assembly and one of the biggest causes of downtime. A flange with the wrong diameter won't fit the feeder; with the wrong hub, the reel wobbles and the tape becomes misaligned.

The three measurements that define a flange

  • External diameter. It's your feeder that limits it, not the amount of tape you want to load. The standards are 7 and 13 inches; We also handle 15.
  • Hub diameter. The core around which the tape is wound: 4, 6 or 7 inches. A smaller cube allows you to mount more meters on the same outer diameter, but it forces the tape to curve more.
  • Width of the piece. It has to correspond to the width of the carrier tape. We handle 4 to 88 mm.

With those three measurements and the width of your tape, the selection is complete.

What we have in stock

  • 14 references with physical existence in Mexico.
  • Outside diameters of 7, 13 and 15 inches.
  • Cubes of 4, 6 and 7 inches.
  • Piece widths of 4 to 88 mm.
  • Various constructions depending on the use: from the light line for storage and transport to the reinforced one for repeated handling in line.

They are sold by the box. If it's in stock and you're in the same city, it will be delivered the same day.

Why it's a good idea to keep them in storage

The flange is reusable and that's what allows repack without depending on anyone: consolidate balances from several partial reels, change a format roll to fit into another feeder, or rescue tape from a reel damaged in transit.

It's also what runs out first and what no one has when they need it. That's why it's worth keeping the two or three sizes your line uses in stock, instead of ordering them when service has already stopped.

Annual Compatibility Guide

We published a guide that cross-references outer diameter, cube, and tape width to resolve compatibility without back-and-forth.

How to assemble

  1. Insert a flange into each end of the tape roll.
  2. Turn them until the lock engages. (lock).
  3. Adjust so that the tape is fixed and centered, without lateral play: if the roll moves, the tape becomes misaligned and the feeder loses traction.

Before mounting it on the machine, it's advisable to check that the assembly rotates freely. A forced flange rubs against the belt and ends up marking it.

Where do the flanges fit?

The flanges support the reel that carries the carrier tape sealed with cover tape. The three pieces are chosen together and must be compatible with each other and with your feeder.

If you prefer to receive the material already mounted on a reel, we offer that service. taping of components. The complete consumables catalog is available at ESD consumables.

How much tape fits on a reel

This is the question that decides whether you buy the 7-inch or the 13-inch flange, and it depends on three things:

  • The outer diameter. Each extra inch adds much more footage than it seems, because the area grows with the square of the radius.
  • The cube. A 4-inch cube provides more usable space than a 7-inch cube of the same outer diameter. However, the tape winds with more curvature in the first few turns.
  • The thickness of the tape. A deep-cavity embossed carrier takes up several times the space of a low-profile one, even if the width is the same. That's why two reels of the same diameter can carry very different film lengths.

And a cheap warning: The two flanges of a reel must be of the same pair. Mixing halves from different series seems to work until the lock doesn't close evenly and the roll has lateral play.

Frequently Asked Questions

What diameter do I need?
The one your feeder accepts, not the one the tape fits. The standard sizes are 7 and 13 inches; we also carry 15.

What is the cube and why does it matter?
It's the core around which the tape is wound, in 4, 6, or 7-inch diameters. A smaller core allows for more meters within the same outer diameter, but it forces the tape to curve more.

Is the flange width the same as the component width?
No: it's the one for the carrier tape. We handle sizes from 4 to 88 mm.

Are they reusable?
Yes, and that's part of their value: they allow you to repackage, consolidate balances, and change a roll format without depending on anyone.

Are they sold individually or by the box?
Per box. Tell us the size and quantity and we'll confirm availability.

How long does delivery take?
If it's in stock and you're in the same city, the same day.
